Should Giada De Laurentiis Have Signed A Prenup?

Food Network star, Giada De Laurentiis, is not only known for her prowess in the kitchen, but also her costly divorce from Todd Thompson back in 2015. Giada and Todd had been a couple for over 20 years and married for 11 years when they announced their separation via Facebook in 2014. The couple listed irreconcilable differences as the cause of their split and had their divorced finalized in 2015.  Divorcing at any stage in life can be a difficult process, but the stress of divorcing in the public eye can cause additional pain for celebrities.

To add to the stress, Giada and Todd did not have a prenuptial agreement. According to multiple news outlets, the final divorce settlement ordered Giada to pay Todd $9,000 a month in child support for their daughter, with whom they would share joint custody. The divorce settlement also awarded Todd their house in Pacific Palisades, worth $3.2 million, and $300,000 in art and furnishings. Since the couple did not have a pre-nup in place, Giada was ordered to give Todd 50% of unpaid advances to cookbooks that she had not even published yet. The unpaid advances alone totaled over $6 million.

The massive divorce payout Todd received had many questioning if Giada should have signed a prenup before their union. A prenup certainly would have aided in protecting the millions she had to share with him from book advances. However, most people don’t enter marriage thinking that it will end someday, including celebrities worth many millions of dollars.
